The East Gippsland region is subject to a range of environmental changes including:
- loss of native vegetation,
- intrusion of saline ground water,
- subsidence,
- declining productivity of farms, and
- the deteriorating condition of the Gippsland Lakes.
In addition, locals point to an apparent decline in the region's rainfall.
